Meet the Alumni – Arjun Ramanathan

By Arjun Ramanathan

MBA is all about having fun; fun with learning new stuff through our courses, and of-course, the lighter non-study stuff. Every class needs a go-to guy to help everybody with regular course-work, and I enjoyed being the Academic Rep for the Schulich India Cohort, doing precisely that.

We are indeed a very lucky batch in that we have the best Professors (more like superstars) in their respective departments flying all the way to India to teach us and guide us through our first year of MBA. Their lectures span 2-3 weeks at the maximum and it is fairly high intensity with long lectures and extensive late night group work. Due to this reason, there is the need for someone to assist the Professors with helping out in administering the courses. They can focus entirely on enabling us to learn and also contribute to everybody’s learning while the academic rep can help in enabling the infrastructure to assist them. Some of the duties that I as an Academic Rep carried out was ensuring that  textbooks, case-studies and class-overheads are distributed to everybody as well as representing the cohort in addressing concerns and issues (if any) regarding course content or deadlines for deliverables.

The perks of being an Academic Rep are having the opportunity to learn through the responsibility that is bestowed upon you and being able to use this as a platform to exhibit your leadership and people-skills by dealing with all stakeholders (Professors and peers). Ensuring that everybody is happy is the ultimate nirvana for every leader! Business School is the best place for everybody to hone these skills and learn along the way. I learnt a lot during my stint as the Acad Rep. This also helps in improving your network with the Professor, and this can work favourably for you once in Toronto, as you can use it for seeking guidance or advice from the Professor or leverage your connection to help you land part-time work as an RA.

These are some of the many memorable moments from my experience and I’d like to once again say that being an Academic Rep is an amazing opportunity for learning a lot of new things, which as I said earlier, is the fun part of MBA. The opportunity is there for the taking; all it needs is the right person to seize it and help with making the Schulich India MBA an amazing learning experience!
